Flora
I started gardening around the age of 12 (I stole my poor mom’s flower and veggie beds right out from under her nose…luckily gardening wasn’t her favourite hobby so it wasn’t too traumatic) and I have been going ever since. I have a degree in horticulture and took a year or 2 of agricultural science in school before I ran off to start working in garden centers and wholesale greenhouses so I could play around with plants every day for about 10 years. The only problem I found with my plan was that when you work in the horticulture industry year round your busiest work days are right in prime planting time so I never managed to get too much done other than some container gardening.
Then a few years ago I met my husband and he asked me to move up to the tiny town in the mountains where he taught. Now have my first real garden all to myself along with enough time to tend it (seeing as I now work in a library that has much less “spring based” hours). We moved into our house in May of last year (2007) and I spent the last season cleaning out and taming the old gardens on the property. There was about 1/4 acre of overgrown plants that had not been cared for in over 20 years so I am still working at it. At one time it looks like it may have been a beautiful garden…I just have to find it underneath all of the weeds and overgrown trees :-).
