My gardening adventures started with my sister, Allison’s, obsession with plants while she was in high school. I would go look in her room all the time at the fabulous leaf shapes and colors. She went off to college and left the plants for our mom to take care of. Most of them died because the plants were hostage in Allison’s room and were forgotten. My mom saved the last few and has them downstairs where she’ll remember them. Jenny, also my sister, is working on dealing with plants…I have an herb garden for her to use in her wonderful culinary creations.
My grandpa and grandma have always had a garden out beside their house and this is another place I have realized that my love of gardening has come from. We use to go help pick beans, berries, tomatoes, peppers and melons from the garden for canning or just for Sunday lunch. I remember it being very hot and lots of bugs, but always barefoot and running.
My Uncle Tony and Aunt Tracey are also great people to talk to about gardening excitement and tips. They have all kinds of insight and new ideas. As I get older, I am more aware of the fabulous people I come from.
Andy, my husband, and I have surrounded ourselves with plants since we got married in ‘03. Andy loves that we have all the plants, but lets them to my care. His parents had a greenhouse when he was growing up and he would help transplant the seedlings in their basement. He is however getting more into the vegetable gardening and excited to get into being more self sustaining and local in our consumption of foods.
