And here I was thinking it was safe to take the cage off because the cats should leave it alone! The darn birds chomped a few of the brand new beans! I wasn’t planning on keeping the cage on throughout the whole season. I was hoping to use it on a new garden. Guess I’ll be needing another cage AND another box.

The Basil was/is growing in clumps. Been planning to transplant for quite a while but not sure where to put them. I read somewhere that I need about 12 plants to have enough leaves for pesto so the eight diagonal spaces in the garden won’t do it. I decided to thin them just a little bit today and planted a few of the smaller ones in the top portion of the upside down tomato. They are supposed to be good companions. There’s still plenty left in the garden!

Took the protective cage off the garden this morning. It was a hot, sunny day and the mix looked dried. After watering as close to the roots as possible, I decided to leave the cage off. The plants are big enough so I doubt that the cats will jump in there and dig around.

A little nervous but this means the cage will be free to cover up a new garden. :)
