We have a beautiful home right on a natural spring creek. Our home is a varnished wood house on pilings. The creek is about 80’ is very clear and runs the entire length of our back yard. We are on approximately 1 acre of wonderful soil. The only problem for gardening is that we have over 30 – 100 year old very large (over 100’ tall) pecan trees. Unfortunately, the pecans are the very little native pecans and are really good for cracking. The trees are wonderful for providing shade and to keep us cooler in the summer, but filters the sun light from any garden areas.
I have an area that we are experimenting with….gets some sun and we can grow, jalapenos, and banana peppers really good. Tried yellow squash and got quite a few this year too. The green bean plants I planted in pots and they only produced enough for 1 meal…lol. The tomato plants produced 3 large tomatoes.
We have a beautiful butterfly garden with espiranza, and a purple sleeve with white flower on a plant that looks like sage (butterfly bush) and bright orange lantana. I’ve just sprinkled in columbine seeds so hopefully they’ll come up next spring.
I would like to try a winter garden with spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and potatoes.
I have several places that I have vincas planted and want to replace them with pansys. Right now I still have time to plant seeds, but can’t seem to find seeds. I would also love to expand on our butterfly garden.
We have a pet bobcat that lives in a pen under the entire house…he even has a jungle gym! You can watch him play tug o war on my husband’s, David’s blog…www.RealTexasBlog.com A sandy colored cat, and blue chow chow, several specialty chickens, ducks and a male peacock. I am getting ready to get miniature donkeys too.
