Jane's Backyard garden

Created on Tuesday, 18 Sep 07

This huge border garden in my backyard is expanding rapidly to accomodate all the plants I have moved from other area in the yard. I have deepened the beds by moving the edge out about 8 feet into the lawn. This border wraps 2/3’s of the way around my backyard. I am hand building the raised stone beds as I go, and am adding and amending soil. My objective is to add tons of organic matter from the compost pile to make a great garden soil, and also add clay and humus for water retention. Water is an expensive commodity in Colorado, so this will save me money and guilt. In some areas I am actually adding plastic, which I punch holes into, a few feet under the oil to help retain moisture. Again, this is a huge undertaking, so check back in ten years and I’m sure I will have made measurable progress.
