Monkeys Garden's Gonsbachtal Fruit & Veggie garden
We took control of this allotment, approximately 800 sq m in size, near a rail line on March 31st, 2008. It had been left untended for about 2 years and I am revitalizing it as quickly as I can.
The Areas: So far the garden is divided into: the terraced beds, the currant bed, the orchard, the vineyard, the woodland area & the bramble patch. I am about done with removing the overgrowth from the past two years, so I do not foresee finding any new areas, but I am sure that each area still has many more surprises to show me.
The Soil: The soil in the beds is very sandy, but also contains a degree of clay. This makes for basically concrete in the height of summer, so I have gone overboard working the soil. I started by removing any invasive weeds, then worked the remaining moss, grass, clover and vetch into the soil. I have added peat to the beads that would need higher moisture retaining qualities, and hope to begin utilizing my own homemade compost by the end of the year.
The Water: The previous owner had built an ingenious system, whereby rain water is collected from the roofs of the tool shed and garden house and stored in a large cistern. The cistern sits at the high point of the property and is connected to blue rain barrels in the terraced beds by way of underground tubing. This way, utilizing only gravity, I can water the beds with very little work. Once the rain water runs out though, there is a hand pump at the lowest point in the garden where I can pump up as much ground water as I need … and as the allotment is in a groundwater protection area it is very clean.
So stay tuned and watch as I learn about what’s already here and bring my own view of gardening to bear in encouraging the entire garden back to life and balance.
