Lucykate's Backyard garden
Lucy Kate’s Flower and Fern garden dwells in my backyard. It’s her favorite place to dig and chase squirrels. Lucy Kate is my Jack Russell and she rules the roost. She has a brother named Frog who she allows to play along. Her garden contains many container style planters since plants that grow in the ground would get dug up! There is a herb garden planted on some shelves hung on the fence. A selection of hostas and ferns grows in the shady corner of the garden. The garden centerpiece is a flower planter that contains a tunnel underneath for Lucy and Frog to run through.

That planter with a tunnel looks very interesting. My two tenterfield terriers (and my plants) would love something like that. Did you make it yourself? I’d love some more details on it. You’ve gotten me thinking…..

My husband designed the tunnel and my father built it. The dogs don’t use it as much as I thought they would. But it is cute to watch them play in it when they do. However with the recent occurrences of snakes in my backyard, I’ve begun to think of boarding it up b/c it would be a great place for a snake to hide. Basically we have found that if the dogs think that an animal is in there, they love it. But if they don’t smell anything, they could care less about it.
The construction on it is pretty simple. it’s basically an 8 foot long box that is a foot deep on the top portion that has the plants and about a foot and a half from front to back I think. It’s like stacking two boxes on top of each other and then adding the little jut outs for the tunnel entrances.

Thanks for that information – I can now understand more clearly what it I see in the photo. It’s a pity they don’t use it as much as you expected. At least it looks lovely, especially with the red flowers against the timber fence.
I wonder if my dogs would use it more if it instead of opening to the front, it was open each end, like an agility tunnel. We don’t have a problem with snakes, but we do have termites, so I’d have to use construction material other than timber.
I still think your idea is great and will continue to think about how I can achieve something similar. Thanks for the sharing!
