Bushi7's Morning sun garden
Last fall we cut down a gigantic forsythia that was threatening to take over the east side yard. This left us with a very large bare spot and a lot of roots that I didn’t want to deal with.
Over the winter a friend suggested I might benefit from lasagna gardening, due to our clay soil. In this form of gardening you don’t dig down but instead build up, using a layering technique. I thought this area would be an ideal place to try this lasagna gardening out.
Instead of dealing with all the forsythia roots, I placed a layer of newspaper over the whole thing in the shape that I wanted the new garden to be, combining a side garden with a small planting around in the front. I put 2 in. of peat on top of the newspaper, followed by a 6 in. layer of leaves left over from last fall, another 2 in. of peat, 6 in. of fresh grass clippings, and another 2 in. of peat. I sprinkled bone meal over the top for added potassium and I was all ready to plant. (This is actually a little shallow – it should be around 24 in. deep – but I ran out of organic material and time!)
