Renemarie's Old orchard Young Orchard garden
The yard between the house and chicken coop was Ron’s dad’s orchard area. It had three golden plums, two red plums, four Italian prunes, and two apple trees with a couple of varieties grafted onto each. These are very mature trees. Since we’ve moved in, one golden plum, one red plum and a couple of Italian prunes have succumbed to the wind and weather.
These trees are full of character, beautiful, and have an aura about them. I sometimes think I can feel their presence, especially on summer evenings and during harvest. It’s like I’m hanging out with them when I’m relaxing in the yard after a hard day’s work.
But unfortunately, their days are numbered. They are mostly rotted in the center, have health issues, etc. So, knowing their days are numbered, I started a new orchard on the edge of the open field by the vegetable garden.
This new orchard has two cherry trees—a bing and a pie, two pear trees, a crabapple, two other apples, a grafted 3-in-1 Japanese pear, two Cornelian cherries, two hazelnuts, a medlar, and a fig. I also just bought a new Italian prune that I planted next to one of the old Italian prunes.
