Planting Oaks's Back Woods garden

Created on Friday, 11 Jul 08

Hmm, so, it doesn’t really have natives in it now. But it is ‘wild’ so I guess that’s the closest type.

This includes the woods on the south and west borders of our property. They range from 10 to 30 feet deep, around the entire edge. Most of the trees are locusts (honey and black) and catalpas. There is a god’s plenty of honeysuckle too. Plus some other things, wild roses, grapevines…

An interesting tidbit I just read is that catalpas and black locusts were generally planted by farmers because the wood was rot-resistant and useful for making fenceposts. I knew that about the locust, but not the catalpa. It’s a good theory for the origin of our woods.

‘The Plan’ is to eventually saw down the honeysuckles (these are, seriously, 25’ tall? More?) and replace them with native-type things.

Other possible (full size) trees to add:
Sycamore
Oak
Sweetgum
Butternut
Hickory
