Huskys4every1's the family garden garden

Created on Thursday, 07 Aug 08

I tried to have a garden last year but Wyoming soil is completely alkalide. Vegitables need to grow in a slightly acidic soil. I got some pointers and help from my boss and my family this year.
My boss gave me some compost home made made up of vegitation yard waste and horse dung. Since it was composted there is no sight or smell of the last ingredient. It was just like soil. He let me borrow a roto tiller and gave me a couple squash plants pumpin and tomato plants.

My husband Dave tilled the area to be the garden. My 2 daughters and I spread the compost then Dave tilled again to blend it all in. The soil was so much richer. My daughter Jaimee age 6 and I planted all the plants and added corn, potato radish carrots and garden bean seeds. My 13 yr old daughter quit on me while adding compost cause she says she’s not a farmer and why work so hard when we can just go to Walmart. We all know Walmart has clothes cd’s and electronics. So that’s teens for you. Jaimee took great pride in helping so this garden became more of a special activity for 2 since then. We would water it together and every day she would check for baby’s (new plants or veggies on existing plants. She would get all excited when she would find them. She looks for harvests and helps with the harvesting too and even has a harvesting pail. So far the radishes harvested awsome and planted for more radishes will be harvesting soon with another row shortly after that. The tomatoes are harvesting great. The squash though slow to start are producing lots of squash and the beans are soon to be ready for harvest. The potato plants are healthy but the carrots failed. Though the leaves were healthy and 6 inches tall there were no carrots.

She even created her own flower garden with used styrofoam cups and pots the plants came in that my boss gave me.

We are already making plans for next year when our garden will be bigger and better.
