Blossom's Veggie patch in containers garden
This is my third attempt at growing vegetables. The dream is to grow as much of my own food as I can. The reality has been found to be wanting….
My biggest challenge so far has been that we rent. This means for the most part whatever we do has to be fairly low impact. This also means that maybe the best sun spots are not up for grabs – the owners established garden or lawn has precedent.
The first year was very much a failure in terms of produce but a very good learning curve. Also we managed to build the no dig beds and get an understanding of how to use the little sun that peeked through the tall trees.
The second year was looking very promising and the broad beans and snow peas where in beautiful bloom by the time the landlord put the house on the market and gave us notice.
Once we moved into the new house we set up a few containers of herbs and tomato plants which gave very little produce.
So here we are year three…..with a whole different approach. I found this great article on how to be self-sufficient on a balcony. Well not completely. But it gave some great ideas for growing vegies and herbs in hanging baskets. I am also going to re-use all my pots I bought last year and lastly build a squarefoot garden.
The general plan of attack if to plant intensively and to grow different varieties together to make the most out of the limited growing space.
Holding thumbs (hopefully green ones this time….)
