Tonya's Ornamental garden
I have had my garden for a number of years, but 2 years ago after a period of illness combined with long term drought, many of the plants in my garden died. Since then I have been trying to resurrect the garden. Initially many of the plants I put in died. After reading Linda Ross’s “Create a sunsmart, waterwise garden”, I realized that I needed to tackle the problem of the soil and waterproofing my garden before I could continue planting. I started out by adding compost, and mulching everything.
Next I slowly installed a dripper system (which is still evolving). Then I started planning and finally planting. The garden is divided into a number of zones. The first is the teardrop gardens which contain a mixture of natives and exotics including lavenders, liriopes and dianellas, flax lilies, cistuses, bearded irises, hellebores and bulbs. Some of the trees in this area include a tibetan cherry, golden elm, red barked dogwood, forest pansy and some japanese maples.
The next zone is the side garden which has a number of established camellias and winter iris.
The last zone is the fruit and vegie garden which I started to set up in 2007. I was onspired to create this garden after reading Linda Woodrow’s book “The permaculture home garden”. I like the idea of a rainbow vegie garden and will try to include as many different colours of vegies as possible, interspersed with herbs and flowers. Fruit trees include pomegranate, fig, apricot, plum, peach, dwarf cherry, cox’s orange pippin apple, dwarf granny smith, meyer lemon, kaffir lime and tahitian lime (double grafted), Australian blood lime, Australian finger lime, blood orange, nagami cumquat and murami cumquat. Because of the frosts the citrus trees are in pots which can be moved into protected areas through the winter.
I am also interested in bushfoods hence the native limes. I also have some chocolate lilies and a tasmanian mountain pepper. I am also intending to get a lemon myrtle tree.

Tonya's Ornamental garden does not have a wish list yet.

What evocative names your irises have, and what a great collection you will have in your garden. Looking forward to pictures of some of the others. Are these irises bred in Australia?

I am slowly adding all my irises and will add pictures as I can. Most of my irises were purchased from specialist iris growers in Australia, which beed their own irises as well as importing from overseas. I have also been lucky enough to have been given a substantial number of irises to start my collection.

I am so envious of your collection of irises, and hellebores too -too gorgeous. I will be looking forward to seeing views of your garden when it is planted.
