Tonya's Vegetable garden
I started this vegie garden in August 2007, after clearing the area of vinca, spring starflower bulbs and grape hyacinth bulbs. The soil was very poor, very hard dry clay. I initially installed a dripper system and then have been spending a lot of time improving the soil with manure, compost, and water crystals. I then topped it off with pea straw. I had mixed success with the first lot of vegies I put in which were a mix of seeds and seedlings. The potatoes (kifler, nicola and saphire) did very well as did the mini chocolate capsicum, chives, comfrey, garlic and silverbeet. The tomatoes and chillies did very poorly.
This year I applied claybreaker, and some more mushroom compost, and planted broad beans as a green manure so hoping that the wsoil will be much better. Eventually I hope to put in a mix of flowers, herbs and brightly coloured vegies including lots of purple, eg. purple basil, purple carrots, violet cauliflower, purple sprouting broccoli, rainbow silverbeet, mix of different coloured tomatoes and capsicums, purple and red potatoes etc.
