I’ve used two ‘Tiny Tower,’ a dwarf Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens ’Monshel’) trees flanking opposite ends of the yard; one at the patio and one at the grass area “X”. These are both up-lit w/malibu lights.

Bed: Long & low +/- 12’ long x 10" wide — (Bed ends into a short column that anchors a curved, seating wall (stone-faced/stacked & capped column & wall). As you’re facing the bed, there is one of the Italian Cypress trees planted; then, the remainder of the bed is planted with 15 1-gal. (true) Dwarf English Boxwood – Buxus sempervirens ‘Suffruticosa’. (Actually, this shouldn’t really be able to be grown ‘here’ due to the warmer climate of Southern California, yet as it is right up against the property fence and slightly shaded from the hottest afternoon sun, it’s been doing fine. To balance up-light on cypress, there is another up-light on the column at the end of the boxwood ‘run’.

Pots:
In this sunny side of the yard, across the patio from the cypress and low string of boxwood, are (two) 20 × 20″ sq. cement pots flanking the house wall, opposite. In these are phormium cookianum ‘black adder’ (deep purple/burgundy) New Zealand flax, which were underplanted with chartreuse Creeping Jenny/Golden Moneywort (Lysimachia nummularia ’Aurea’).

One (1) pittosporum tenufolium (silver sheen) tree is on the back side of short, curved seat wall separating patio from grass area. This is up-lit.

Other side of the house: large gardenia standards in 20 × 20 sq. pots w/black mondo grass underneath — leaves spilling over the pots; bizarre chartreuse & dark brown spider orchids (potted) ; with chartreuse ‘keylime’ heuchera; black scallop carpetbugle-ajuga w/keylime huechera.

Two (2) pittosporum tenufolium (silver sheen) trees are placed in front of new cement wall (on each side) that anchor 4’-wide walkway columns (faced & capped w/stone.
