Rockabella9's Perth Makeshift garden

We have a frontyard with concrete ground that gets plenty of sunshine and gets pretty warm in the mornings, which is suitable for a container garden. Having never gardened in my life (except for the odd cacti here and there, which all end up dead), at first I didn’t want to be too ambitious and just wanted to grow condiments to flavour our food, but after seeing all the interesting veggies that fellow Folians have grown, I started to get interested in them as well. I had just 2 months to grow the veggies and under 4 months for the herbs, but I did manage to grow enough for us to eat.

Since our “growing season” here lasts only 4 months as after that we are going home for the holidays, I tried to use re-purposed materials as far as possible. My choice of containers are boxes and empty drink containers that I line with broken up styrofoam, items which were either already in the house or were collected from the market (after asking for permission first, of course:) ). The potting mix we had to purchase from the stores though, and this constituted our most costly outlay, but we can always reuse them in the next “growing season”.

Since I’ve grown in confidence in gardening, I shall invest more in proper containers in the next “growing season”. I intend to get some self-watering containers to reduce the amount of time I spend watering and reduce the chances of diseases resulting from wet foliage, as well as some casters to put the pots in so the plants can be wheeled around to catch the sun.
