Bugbears's Backyard garden

In February 2008 we moved into the Inner Sunset of San Francisco. We were pleased to finally have a backyard and frontyard of our own, though it took us a while to settle in and finally think about tending to the very weed-overgrown, under-utilized land.

In August, Danny chopped down and removed 4 large trees which basically were huge, overgrown weeds: Acacia Melanoxylon Gestalt. We set down redwood bark and cleared out our first plot for vegetables. We righted a very crooked, leaning apple tree, and have 4 more plots identified for spring planting.

…and so begins our gardening adventures… we are finding Pam Peirce’s Golden Gate Gardening an exceptionally invaluable book as it’s specifically targeted to growing edibles in San Francisco, and addresses the ups and downs of gardening in our particularly foggy neighborhood.
