Phillippa's Backyard garden
We live in a tiny house on stilts on a big, rectangular block of land. Our house is built on an old sand works behind some national park next to the coast. Our garden gets full sun until around mid afternoon, when the shadow of the house starts to creep across the yard. I don’t think we get frost. I think that’s because we are so close to the coast. Our garden is certainly warmer than the gardens of any of our Sydney relatives.
We’ve lived here four years. The soil has improved over time as we have grown things and added lots of manure and mulch. We grow lots of things. When we arrived there were a few NSW Christmas bushes, some stunted azaleas and a mango tree covered in sooty mould.
After an initial crazy idea to plant trees wherever we felt like, we realised we needed some garden beds. Garden beds have made it easier to mow and mulch. Our garden is infested with Dollarweed. Our plants’ natural enemy is Fergus, our one year old Labrador. Our garden is messy and overgrown and sometimes frustrating in its ability to get away from us.
We mostly plant vegetables, fruit and herbs but we also have some flowers, which our daughter likes to pick to make posies. Things that have grown well in our garden are potatoes, tomatoes, capsicums, eggplant, chillies, zucchini, corn, pumpkin, olives and mulberries. We killed more than one avocado before we found the right spot for them.
We have a watering tank and compost bins.
We blog about our garden at The Veg’able Patch.
