We’re on 1.25 acres in a high rainfall area, with a wonderful loamy clay soil. I grew up on wonderful home-grown vegetables, and now that I have space and children of my own, I feel a strange urge to provide them with the same experience.
We’ve had to build a long retaining wall around two sides of the house as it was built on a large cut & fill. We asked the guy with the digger to fill behind the wall with topsoil, and flatten it out for about 1m before the start of the steep & slippery slope above. He did so, mostly – when I dig, I still find large pockets of impermeable clay, which I’m removing bit by bit. I planted ‘Green Manure’ over the winter in spots where heavy feeders will go now. We’ll see how that goes.
It’s working well. I have added lots of mushroom compost whenever I plant out, and have been mulching with pea straw in an effort to further improve the soil.
Last year the tomatoes were variable, the corn was disappointing, the caulis and broccoli were wonderful, the cabbages shot strait to seed without heading, our lettuce was fantastic.
