Looking back on Spinach and Chard
Well, look at that; it seems that I didn’t make use of this site at all after starting my kitchen garden in the fall! I can give you an update on my spinach and chard: both were delicious! I grew only a few rows in the clayey soil beside my neighbour’s house. I did not have many weeds at all and planted in a hexagonal pattern using three rows. Both the chard and spinach beds were about six feet long. By August 2, I noted that some of the spinach had sprouted. After most of the plants came up, I seeded into the empty spots. Two seedlings seemed to sprout from each chard seed and I did not thin the plants. The plants grew throughout the fall and I had a few small meals from them. On October 28 and 29, I harvested all of the plants and blanched and froze them in lumps. Each little crop fit into a large ziplock bag! While it wasn’t an abundant crop, it did work well in the small area that I had. Mmmm. I’ll be sure to plant more this summer!
