gwendygay Moving Along

Thursday, 05 Jun 08 (posted about 6 months ago) Cloudy 11°C / 52°F

I’ve created paths out of large strips of cardboard weighed down with rocks. The sheet composting isn’t finished, but I’m planting anyway.

I’ve started the seeds indoors, just until they’ve opened their first leaves. This is so I can control the moisture and temperature (on a heat mat). Seems to be working, as those I’ve put out have survived so far.

The planting out procedure looks like this…
-Dig a hole in the sheet compost about 3 times the size of the transplant.
-Fill hole with a mixture of 1 part regular dirt, 1 part coconut fiber, 1 part worm castings and a bit of alfalfa meal and greensand.
-Put in plant, backfilling with above mixture.
-Mulch well with coconut fiber, hopefully this will provide some protection against diseases.
