My wayward baby robin
This week my little robin babies were raided by something in the middle of the night and I found 2 of the little ones with pin feathers dead on the ground. I did however notice there was still one left in the nest in my gorgeous clematis now in full bloom…so I’ve been watching him closely.
Mom has been attentive and feeding still so I was just glad things were ok. Yesterday I returned from an all day excursion garden center hopping with my good friends to find the baby was no longer in the nest..but on the ground!!! All he could do was run. His little feathers were barely useful to keep him warm.
I wasn’t sure what to do…if I touch him the mother might reject him..If I leave him the crows or owls would surely get him. I figured since he was close to being a fledgling by a few days I would risk it and put him in the nest and hope mom would come back. If not I would handraise him like I have others in the past.
SOOOOO….I keep putting him back in his nest..he keeps diving out!! His mom and dad take turns feeding him on the ground so I am leaving him alone and just observing.
He’s too young to fly but even in one day can now hop to a branch 2 feet; off the ground. The nest was in my beautiful Romantika clematis so I nicknamed him/her “lover”
The other photos show you how stunning the clematis is right now. Almost black blooms until they are backlit…(closeup in backlit)
The last image is of my Meg….taking time to smell the roses!!
I’ll keep you up dated on how “Lover” is doing tomorrow..also have tons of pix from the garden centers and my primo finds!!! Cistus Nursery is one of the best in the nation for rare and unusual plants..OMG I went crazy!! Now where to put all this stuff???
Garden on friends!!!
