Day 99

Harvesting: Took them out
These were bolting and weren’t exactly my favorite salad leaves – a bit bland, I’ve got better ones in the garden – so I took them out and planted some more chard and beetroot.

Annet, we just harvested all of our salad greens yesterday as well, not because they were doing poorly, but because they were doing so well! I’ve never had salad greens go this far into the summer without bolting. We just cut it back rather than pulling it to see if it would give us another crop off the same roots.

I know! I’ve got lots of salad leaves as well. Mine do sometimes last all summer – that is, if we don’t have too much hot weather AND if they’re in a nice shady position AND if they’re the right kind..
Anyway, I already harvested my little gem lettuces, which were starting to bolt and had turned bitter. I still have my oakleaf, another salad mix (which is in a shady part of the bed) and my rocket. They do bolt slightly, but I just pinch the flower buds out and they keep going. I’ll keep them as long as they taste good.
