SVBs always win
I took 3 squash vine borer larva out of this plant today, following Mel Bartholomew’s directions. There’s only one stem left that has not been infested. None of my companion planting tricks (chives, letting one radish go to seed, herbs in containers) seem to have had any deterrent effect on them.
Hopefully I can keep the plant growing for long enough to harvest the fruit that currently remain – about 7 immature squash are on the plant right now. But I doubt that I will manage to get many more than that.

Noooooo! Have you tried putting a pile of dirt over the site of injury? I’ve yet to get squash vine borers, but I’ve read that you can sometimes get the injured stems to re-root at the site of the incision.

Thanks cmagnus, I’ll go do that right now. I tied a piece of soft cotton around it to try and keep it closed and clean, but rooting sounds much better.

Rooting didn’t work for us. That vine is wilted and dead now, just a day later. Be sure to update with your results.

I don’t know that the vines have exactly rooted, but they haven’t wilted either. Unfortunately, the one large stem that wasn’t infested before, is now. I pulled that jerk out this morning.
