spidra First Squirrel Sighting of the Season

Thursday, 24 Jul 08 (posted about 6 months ago) Sunny 18°C / 65°F

I haven’t had to fight the squirrels for the figs or any other fruit so far this year. I didn’t know what had happened to them but I was happy. However, I saw one running along the fenceline today. Dang. Although, actually, it’s the birds that are fighting me for figs now. They’ve been taking pecks out of all of them. If it keeps them from fruit I like better, I can put up with that. However, I like to have figs as trading materials as they’re pricier in stores than most things I grow. I’d also like to try dehydrating some as I think I’ll like them better dried than fresh. But I keep seeing pecked figs on the tree…

How fantastic to have figs in your garden, and how maddening to have pecks out of them. I have never had a fresh fig only dried ones, but I hear fresh figs are delicious.

I actually vastly prefer dry figs, but fresh Black Mission figs are all the rage around here.
