garden recap
Tricia and I went out to the garden for a little bit tonite.
We watered the tomatoes and some others that needed it (2 loads).
Tricia planted radishes/carrots/onions in an empty spot and pulled the kale and swiss chard out, while I checked tomato suckers, did some minor weeding, and major fertilizing. This is the week I am breaking down and buying a pump sprayer for this last job. Fertilizing an approximately 1,500 square foot garden with a little hand spritzer is not fun anymore.
A Bumblebee chased Tricia around, trying to pollinate her bright yellow shirt. It sounded like a helicopter flying by!
We harvested a ton of beans and some onions and banana peppers. Later this week, we’re going to get the bean snapped and ready for canning/freezing. While we do this, we are going to have a taste test to see which of the three green bean types we are growing.
Here’s the count on the beans (despite the groundhog damage):
- Top Crop – 2 pounds
- Blue Lake 274 -3 pounds
- and the winner…
Romano – 3.5 pounds!
To be fair, the Top Crop had the smallest number of plants, but we planted more Blue Lake 274 than Romano!

It’s really great that you are getting so many beans! I definitely need to plant more next year. Can you comment on how many plants of the various kinds you planted?
