Supporting Local Growers...
We have a plethora of Farmer’s Markets to choose from in Fort Collins. In fact, I almost feel as though we have too many, as not a single one has all the things we like to get at the Farmer’s Market. The largest (and therefore the one with the most variety) is the Saturday morning one in Old Town. It is now being held in the county building’s parking lot at Oak and Howes.
Today was our first trek to that market but aside from there being no mushroom vendors we were quite pleased. This one still had some plant vendors despite it being August. Since we had little luck with starting seeds indoors and getting them through hardening off and transplanting we bought some plants from East Vine Farms.
We picked up three types of basil and a rosemary. They have been transplanted into containers that are part of the South Patio Container garden. But, the intention is for these pots to serve our herbal needs in the winter. But, with no AC we keep shades and drapes closed during much of the day so light is scarce inside during the summer so we thought it best to leave them outdoors until indoor light is more prevalent and the outdoors begin being a hazard for the plants. We also sowed one pot of the Sweet Genevese basil and in the pot with rosemary sowed oregano, thyme, marjoram, and sage.
For the time being the pots are on the front step beneath the overhang where they get shade for the hottest part of the day. We’ll gradually move them out to more hours of sun as the plants become established.
