verthandei Strawberry

Sunday, 17 Aug 08 (posted about 4 months ago) Sunny 21°C / 70°F

The strawberries were not doing much in their little pots, so I moved them to a new window box I acquired yesterday from OSH. They were a little root bound, but there were no evidence of runners. Hopefully their new location will give them room to stretch their legs a bit. They way underproduced this summer (though really, getting any home-grown strawberries is a thrill). They also seem to want more sun than the new dappled-sun regime, so I’ve moved them to a better spot.

I wish I knew what variety these are! All I know is that they are ever-bearing.

Yum. Have I mentioned that I’m utterly amazed by the variety of things you have growing on your balcony?

And yet, I look out there and think I could be doing so much more! The balcony is just 4′×13′, and many of the plants are single plants, or small amounts in the window boxes. I am uber jealous of people with real gardens. I’ve taken a few photos today and will put them up soon, but they really don’t do it justice (it’s very difficult taking a photo of such a narrow space!)

Ok guys, check out my Balcony Garden home page for the photos! But prepare to be disappointed – they really don’t do it justice.

I’ve had a balcony garden and I get the scale. And I get the real garden jealousy. I’m just regretting a little, now that I have my first “real” garden, that I planted a lot of a few things instead of a few of a lot of things because I was afraid of over extending myself. When I see what you’ve done with your balcony… I wish I’d been as adventurous.

    Yeah, but there’s always fall… and winter… and next spring… and…

Do you have Coleman’s Four-Season Harvest? If you could swing building some sort of cold frame/hoop house over your plot for the winter (and since it isn’t giant it probably wouldn’t be too hard) you could grow stuff all year. Coleman says that it isn’t the cold temperatures that kills many plants, but exposure. Now that your not-cool neighbor has built a fence so that he doesn’t have to look at icky squash leaves, you wouldn’t have to worry about offending anyone. :) (And yes, I really am considering trying to build/buy some sort of greenhouse for the balcony for the winter – it would be great if I could enclose the whole thing, but I think that might be cost prohibitive.)
