Pruning: Silver linings
After discovering that the Pope John rose is a climber and needs a trellis, I’ve been researching trellises for my idea of creating a hidden garden at the new patio, with a path behind the spirea and discovered that trellises are freaking expensive. Then I realized I’ve got this big ole tree that’s going to be coming down. Got up on a ladder (and a stool, truth be told) with my old handsaw this morning and cut down any branch I could reach that was 2" diameter or less. I’ll get Bill to figure out how to make a trellis out of these (I could probably make one, but he’ll do it right.) We get to keep the pear tree, after a fashion, we don’t use unnecessary resources, and we save $400. Yay!

I really hope you don’t mean on a stool on a ladder, cause I’m trembling with fear over here for you if you are!

Just to make you even more nervous, of course I’m recovering from a broken ankle, and have recurring tendonitis in my right wrist. But, um, yeah, a step stool at first. It did occur to me as I was doing this that it was probably pretty stupid so I dragged out the ladder, which is one of those super-stable ones with large steps rather than rungs. Just cause, you know, the bouncy-type chair that I tried first was totally not working, it kept tipping forward when I sawed!

Whew, I’m so glad the ladder is stable. And that you didn’t put the stool on it! I’ve developed a real fear of ladders. In the last three years, two people close to me and one more distant (the sister of a friend) have fallen off ladders and been seriously injured. I’m talking broken heels, broken femurs, broken vertebrae and coma. These days I hire a handyman whenever a ladder needs stood upon.

Oh, and I really meant to comment on the trellis — I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I think it’s a great idea.
