Week 2 gardening summary - weeds weeds weeds
Wow, has it only been 2 weeks since I started putting my plants into my SFG? I picked a good time it seems. The last week has been hot, very unusual for where I live. Everything is growing very nicely. Though I have to say, my neighbor’s lettuce and pumpkin (grown from seed) seem to be growing way faster than mine. She put hers in the ground, with non-amended soil; whereas I have the SFG combination soil. Wonder why?
No matter, the plants are doing well except the basil, which isn’t growing that fast, and the pumpkin, which look to be wilting. I don’t know if I’m over watering it or what.
Our plot of land in the community garden is right next to an overgrown blackberry patch. And I’ve been pulling out little blackberry shoots that have grown 12 inches of shoot in order to reach the top of my mulched SFG. Today, I dug my hand in to try to pull out as much of it as possible and discovered two shoots connected to each other! ARGH!!!
I think they’ll just keep coming up as I’m watering the ground underneath, which I bet is full of grass seeds and blackberry vines. I guess I should have put that black garden cover thing on before I put the SFG soil on. I was so inspired by the Weedless Gardening book that I thought 12 inches of soil would do the trick of not having weeds. I mean, they have to come up 12 inches!
But I under-estimated the will to live for those weeds….Definitely covering up the rest of the plot now….

Blackberry canes are the worst. They will travel a long way to get to water and will force their way through anything. I’d definitely put something down under your beds if you are dealing with blackberry.
