smurfett Harvesting: Lettuce for salad!

Thursday, 28 Aug 08 (posted about 4 months ago) Sunny 26°C / 78°F

It took two weeks for the lettuce to grow big enough. I looked up how to harvest lettuce last night and they said that you can just keep cutting the outer leaves close to the stem. I brought my scissor along and that’s what I did.

I was really surprised at just how much lettuce I cut off from the 6 plants. It made me really happy! After a few cuts, I realized that I can imagine each leaf I’m cutting in a salad and that totally gave me a good idea of which ones to cut. In addition, the ones that weren’t ready had a very narrow stem area.

Anyways, I’m really happy w/ the lettuce and now I think I have a good idea of how many I want to plant for next year. I think 1 square foot (4 lettuce) is good enough for 2 people. I was thinking that I will also plant some other types so that it would make a good salad.

Just have to figure out how I’m supposed to store it before we eat it tomorrow. Yes yes, should have done it right before we were going to eat it, but the garden is kind of a walk to get to.

So happy!
