Sown: Well, it begins...
My tropical edible garden begins – in the form of sweet potato. I am growing for the delicious leaves. They are also very pretty.
During the Japanese Occupation, many people subsisted on tapioca and sweet potato. The sweet potato is a very versatile root vegetable. Yummy root and leaves – simple, basic but very valuable. It was also used by the Samsui women, woman construction workers who came to Singapore in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as a green vegetable. Being poor, they cooked the leaves for their meals.
So, for me, the sweet potato is food, history and an important lesson.
