cmagnus harvest

Friday, 29 Aug 08 (posted about 3 months ago) Overcast 22°C / 72°F

Today I harvested:

  • one ~20lb squash
  • 4 eggplants
  • 3 fresno peppers
  • more longbeans than I can subitize
  • 1 thai chili
  • 2 big nasturtium seeds and 1 miniscule nasturtium seed

Don’t ask what possessed me to pose them. But I had to make a face.

That is a big, big squash. It’s very cool!

Do you ever freeze your nasturtium greens? I’ve been thinking I might, perhaps mixed with blanched spinach or something. Especially since all I’ve gotten out of my nasturtiums is greens!

    (P.S. subitize — good word!)

Freezing nasturtiums honestly hadn’t occurred to me. Mine are still going gung-ho, so I don’t want to weaken the plants before I can get as many seeds as possible from them. I want to plant squash on purpose next year, and these are great companion plants, so I want enough to put around the backyard. Plus after a long, heart to heart talk with my partner about eggplant overload vs. growing more varieties, we might put in another bed, which means I’d need even more nasturtiums.

But now that you’ve planted that idea in my head, when the first frost date approaches I’ll have to seriously consider blanching and freezing a bunch of nasturtium greens.

I put some nasturtium greens just in my crisper, and they’re really holding up (10 days and still reasonably fresh, or at least edible). I wonder if my herb trick would work, of freezing them in water in ice cube trays. This works with soft leaves like basil and parsley; haven’t tried it with something crisper like nasturtium leaves, but I bet it would work with the flowers.

Me too. I feel a bizarre sense of loss when I go out into the squash patch and it’s not there. And this isn’t just because of the great excuse it provided for not mowing back there. It’s a little scarred, but hopefully it can keep until thanksgiving, because if it does, it will make a rather impressive feast.
