The Caterpillars Fly!
In my garden this morning, what do I spy but a newly emerged swallowtail butterfly. That’s right, those same caterpillars from my August 20th post are now flying the friendly skies (at least I hope they are friendly!) I tried to ID it and what I came up with was a Pipevine Swallowtail. But I could be getting it wrong, as I’m not a butterfly specialist. [As it turns out, I was wrong! I ID’d the caterpillar correctly on 8/20, and then misidentified the butterfly this morning. It’s a Black Swallowtail.]
What a nice thing to actually see the butterfly before it flies off to its new life. I feel like a proud new Momma, even though I did nothing to make this special event happen.
