Fruiting: Getting long
I think I’m having luffa stir fry this weekend!
Only one luffa fruit so far. I have a few female flowers, but no male in sight. I am so glad that I played human bee when I spotted the first male flower.

I had no idea they were edible! I though they were for sponges.

Wen, I thought the same thing, and I couldn’t figure out why so many people are growing them! This explains everything!

Oh yeah! I’m from Hong Kong, and grew up eating this. In fact we have different names for angled luffa and smooth luffa. Angled luffa is much more common.

When you cook it up you’ll have to post a recipe (and photos) since I might have some soon (with any luck)… :)

I just received luffa seeds from a friend. Looks like I have to try growing them then!
How do you differentiate between the male and female flowers?

Verthandei: sure, I’ll take some photos when I do my stir fry.
Skyfiery: The females have a baby fruit at the end of the blossom. You can see some photos here: http://myfolia.com/journals/27788. The first bud is a female, the second a male.
