Puzzlement
I am getting these brown spots on my Chili Reds. One small spot that expands. I have read where this is lack of calcium. Any ideas?

Well, lack of lots of minerals can show up that way. Of course, there’s also a blight or virus or fungus of some sort that attacks nightshade plants that looks similar as well. That said, I’ve personally found that peppers hold up much better to diseases than anything else in the nightshade family, so lets hope for mineral deficiency. Don’t trust me for a diagnosis, because I’ve just had my first mineral deficiency this year and it’s late enough in the season that I decided not to treat it until next year. So I don’t even know if I’m right.
In any case, it might help in your research to be aware that calcium and magnesium compete for absorption, so if it’s one of the two, and you get the wrong one, you can make the problem worse. But you can also add magnesium through a foliar spray made from disolving epsom salts in water. So if you add calcium to the soil and it doesn’t help, epsom salt foliar spray seems like a halfway decent backup plan.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. I had used epsom salt in a sprya earlier in the season then slacked off as I was concerning about over doing it. I did not know that calcium and magnesium competed for absorption. I will to mix uo a batch of epsom salt for the sprayer this weekend and see if that will make an improvement.
