Nic's Iceland Poppy 'Special Mix'

Seems like I only got a couple of weeks of admiring the beautiful blooms when it got hit quite suddenly by what looks like powdery mildew. I’m thinking it’s got to be due to the warm wet weather that we have been having lately, but it was so fast to take over the entire container and kill everything off.

Oh well, it was pretty while it lasted anyway. Definitely going to plant some more of these in the future again.

At last – a different colour poppy appears! So much for a mix – they are 99% yellow!

Hurray! The first weird looking hairy pod opened up overnight and this magnificent flower popped out from inside. It was such a shock to open the blinds in the morning and see this – makes me think that I could do more of this whole flower growing business (don’t tell Nath though, he doesn’t much like plants he can’t eat!)

I have never grown Poppies before, so I’m really shocked at how ugly they are just before they bloom. Really weird stuff!

I spent about half an hour carefully thinning the poppies out by snipping the weaker ones off at the stem. I’m not sure that I have thinned these enough, but we’ll wait and see…

Moved from my Windowsill garden

Oops – I’ve left this grow far too much and now it’s going to be an absolute pain to thin out. It’s starting to look more like lettuce!
