Butterbean Edamame Beans have a tender, buttery, sweet flavor. The boiled beans are easily popped out of the pod straight to your mouth! Edamame (pronounced ‘ed-uh-mah-may’) means “beans on a branchâ€. The beans are 40% protein (11 grams in ½ cup of cooked beans), high in vitamins A, B, calcium, and iron. They are also very high in fiber and essential fatty acids. Lower cholesterol and reduced risk of heart disease are just a few of the benefits credited to the increased consumption of soy products. Even better than the nutritional perks, they taste incredible! Why snack on potato chips when you can have edamame beans as a healthier tasty treat? The Japanese are fond of serving them as an appetizer with beer. This easy to grow snack is grown a lot like other types of beans. When to plant outside: RECOMMENDED. Spring, after average last frost. If weather is still cool and wet, wait until it warms up. When to start inside: Not recommended. Special Sowing & Germination Instructions: Many people suggest soaking the seeds for 3 or 4 hours before planting. It isn’t absolutely necessary, but seeds can be treated with an inoculate containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria which will assist it in its nitrogen producing capabilities. For best results- BUY NEW SEED EVERY YEAR. Edamame seed does not store well, and old seed is a big contributor to home garden failure. If you will not be planting your seeds immediately after purchase, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
