The outer ‘leaves’ are last years growth. They shrivel up revealing the new growth (2 new leaves in each old one). The plant eventually becomes a hummock of these subdivisions. The crucial thing is to keep them very dry over the right season, and they need strong light. Lithops are very slow growing.
