Murray Murray's Potato Tire Towers
Solanum tuberosum

I start with 5 tires and filled them with rich compost (home brew). In each tire I planted one potato saved from last years crop. After they sprouted I added tires and filled dirt around the plants as they grew. Now I have tire stacks two or three high and the plants are up to my chest height. I’ll be harvesting new potato by Christmas.

I saw Jamie Oliver suggest that you should keep piling dirt around potatoes so that they keep growing up but I was thinking that it wouldn’t work as all you would have is a massive pile of dirt.

This is an ingenious solution. I love it!

The tires help by trapping extra heat as well as holding the dirt up, plus they make them really easy to harvest… you just lift the tires off and pick up the spuds that fall out.

Nice to see someone doing this. I have heard of it being done, but have always had a shortage of tyres. Now that we are being taxed for their disposal, it makes sense to take your old ones home and grow potatoes in them :-)
