spidra Spidra's Avocado 'Bacon'

I got some greenwood from a fellow CRFG member and splice grafted it onto my seedling avocado tree. From CRFG Fruit Facts: “Origin James Bacon, Buena Park, 1954. Hybrid. Tree broad, productive. Fruit small to medium, to 12 oz., round-ovoid, smooth green. Flesh only fair, almost colorless,seed cavity molds rapidly. Hardy for Bay Area, Central Valley. To 25° F. Season December.” From the California Avocado Commision Site: A mid-winter green of good quality, the Bacon is a medium-sized fruit available late fall into spring.

  • Medium to large seed
  • Easy peeling
  • Light taste

Size: Medium, ranging from 6 to 12 ounces

Appearance: Smooth thin green skin; Yellow-green flesh

Ripe Characteristics: Skin remains green, darkens slightly; Fruit yields to gentle pressure when ripe
