Yates Seeds Stand in a Museum
Our roadtrip last month took us to the historical museum in Esperance, where we came across this great piece, a Yates seeds stand which dates from sometime in yesteryear (many pieces in this eclectic museum were undated). It was kinda fun to see what seeds were offered in those days compared to ...

    Fending for itself

    Fending for itself
Just before we left for our roadtrip, we transplanted what I intended to keep into styrofoam boxes and moved them to the backyard laundry area. I was a tad rough with the transplanting at times and a lot of roots were ripped off. I watered them in thoroughly anyway with some Dynamic Lifter pell...

Mel, Dan and I made Bokashi today. It was quite easy to do. Will now have to wait two weeks before testing it out.

    Beginning again

    Posted about 19 days ago | Cloudy 24°C / 75°F

I decided to re-do my two plots in the front yard and let it sit while I was away for 10 days. I mixed the soil with dried lichee leaves, peat moss, dirt, and a fertilizer I got from Fukuda seed store. I watered it with EM-1 and covered it for 14+ days. When I removed the plastic from the maka...

    Yay, a ladybug

    Yay, a ladybug
Finally, a beneficial insect in my garden! No aphids for it here that I know of though, just mostly gnats, caterpillars and slugs. My niece loves ladybugs so I took this picture to show her.

The heat and all its pests

    Posted about 1 months ago | Sunny 32°C / 90°F | 2 comments | 3 thumbs up!

The heat and all its pests
There have been quite a few hot days the past couple of weeks, which is good ‘cos that means no more shivering when coming out of the shower. But it’s also bad for the garden ‘cos it seems to have drastically increased the white butterfly population in the neighbourhood. These...

The warm weather has started. About 30deg.C bothe yesterday and today. Forecast cooler for the next few days. The restriction on water means only Sunday and Wed.can see water being used. It means mulch is essential.

    I am SLOW.
Finally, an update! The ginger is becoming gorgeous! Unfortunately, the oregano & mint are still scraggly, but they really do need a better, deeper pot. Ah, well. Meantime, we just today (september 26) got our first tiny bit of rain in Jerusalem! Hooray! After about 6 months without a drop, i...

    Itty-bitty compost...

    Posted about 5 months ago | Sunny 31°C / 88°F

Even though we usually survive on instant coffee at home (as do most Israelis!), a friend brought us a bag of REAL coffee… in addition to the pleasure of drinking it (after boiling it in a saucepan and straining it into a cup…), I’ve been bringing the grounds out to the plants a...
